IPL 2018: Players Sunrisers Hyderabad could retain using RTM

The 2016 champions surprised us all when they decided to leave out Shikhar Dhawan from their list of retained players and keep hold of only two, their captain David Warner and strike bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Retaining two players allows them to use three RTM cards in the auction and with players such as Rashid Khan, Dhawan, Moises Henriques, Mohammad Nabi and Yuvraj Singh in the pool, the Hyderabad team will look to bring all their three cards into play.

IPL 2018: Will he be perfect addition to the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad?

David Miller

South African middle-order batsman David Miller has had a very tumultuous time in the Indian Premier League. From being one of the clutch players for Kings XI Punjab to being appointed the captain to being sacked, not only from captaincy but also from the playing eleven, Miller has seen it all.

The fact that Punjab retained only Axar Patel before the auctions, means that Miller will be back in the auctions and this presents other teams with an opportunity to snap him up.

Considering various permutations and combinations and looking at the retentions made, Sunrisers Hyderabad look the most likely team which could rope in Miller for the upcoming season.

The fact that Miller is a middle order batsman who can not only control the innings but towards the end unleash his power works perfectly for Hyderabad who would ideally want an experienced man during the middle over.

In the previous season, this is one area where SRH faltered, as despite the bright starts provided by David Warner they stumbled around in the middle overs and did not manage to reach match-winning scores.

What also works for Miller is that he is in great form as he scored the joint fastest century in T20s in only 35 balls against Bangladesh and by his own admission is in pretty good space.

Also, the coach of SRH, Tom Moody has worked with Miller previously and knows his game inside out which will allow the team management to define roles with precision.

The fact that the South African has spent a long time in the IPL will give him an opportunity to assist David Warner on the field, much like what Kane Williamson did in the previous season and this would only help the team.

It goes without saying that the presence of two powerful hitters in the top four or five renders a unique balance to any team and along with Warner, Miller can combine to be an unstoppable force not only in 2018 but for several seasons down the line.

Now they are left with ₹ 59 Crs + 3 RTM

IPL 2018: Players Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) should retain

The 2016 Champions Sunrisers Hyderabad would love to retain some players from their current squad. David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan were Hyderabad’s prolific run scorers in the last 4 seasons. Yuvi was good in the middle order.

The strength of Sunrisers is their bowling unit. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was sensational over the last 2 seasons while the Afghani wonder kid Rashid Khan mesmerized opponents with his leg spin last year.

Carrying on their successful run in the tournament and learning from their past seasons, the team will look forward to winning the IPL title for the second time.

Here are the players that Sunrisers Hyderabad should absolutely retain (3 retention + 2 RTM card) for the 2018 season:

1. David Warner

David Warner

David Warner has been the pillar of the Hyderabad based franchise since he was bought by the team in 2014. Apart from leading from the front as a captain, he has scored tons of runs for the team and fired on the top, giving SRH an accelerated start in almost every inning. A hard-hitter of the ball, Warner blows away the opposition on his day.

David Warner will be the first player in the list of three to be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad. Their talismanic captain has scored more than 600 runs in the last edition of Indian Premier League season and one of the most consistent players in IPL. He single-handedly won them many games and one of the most devastating batsmen in world cricket right now.

David Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad to the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2016. Starting off as a hard-hitting opening batsman, Warner adapted well to Indian conditions and played the captains role to perfection. He is one player in the squad no-one would like to lose.

2. Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan

The left-handed batsman from Delhi is David Warner’s partner in crime. He plays a perfect foil to Warner’s aggression and helps steady the Sunrisers batting lineup. Dhawan’s role is to play the anchor, and let the batsmen at other end play aggressively. With Yuvraj Singh and Moises Henriques in the middle order, Dhawan’s role is an important one for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

He has been consistent over the last 4 Indian Premier League season for SRH scoring 300+ runs in each of the four seasons. A stylish left-hander with the ability to read the game and play accordingly. He is good against spin and has every shot in the book to be a perfect Twenty20 player.

3. Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been the mainstay of the Sunrisers bowling attack over the last four seasons. He does the tough job of bowling in the power-play and in the death overs. He can swing the new ball prodigiously and has a brilliant yorker. He took 26 wickets in the 2016 Indian Premier League season and finished as the highest wicket-taker.

No bowler in Indian Premier League (IPL) has taken more wickets than Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the last four seasons combined. He has an economy rate of 7 which is excellent for a bowler who bowls in power play and in death.

If he goes into the auction, he could cost a fortune for any team that wishes to take him. SRH will not be likely to take that risk.

4. Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan

The 18-year-old Afghani leg-spinner has been a revelation in the 2017 edition of Indian Premier League and the first player from Afghanistan to play in the competition.

He was an unknown commodity to many before the IPL but surprised everyone with his skill. He mesmerised most batsmen in the IPL with his variations and dismissed some of the best batsmen in the world like Rohit Sharma and Steve Smith.

His economy was second best among bowlers who took more than 15 wickets. He met the expectations of the Hyderabad based franchise who would look to get him back in the Sunrisers’ camp.

5. Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh

SRH bought Yuvraj Singh in 2016 of IPL Auction for ₹7,00,00,000.

Since then he has been very handy for SRH in the middle order, he had a very successful IPL campaign with the Sunrisers Hyderabad after winning the 2016 Indian Premier League, he also put a strong performance in the final after scoring 38 runs from 23 balls.

They should retain Yuvraj to strengthen their middle order..
