IPL 2018: Kings XI Punjab decide players to be retained

Ahead of the player retention for IPL 2018, Kings XI Punjab director Virender Sehwag admitted that they will retain just one player and use the Right To Match (RTM) cards to keep players who have been incredibly consistent for the franchise.

Speaking ahead of the player retention, Sehwag said: “We are planning to retain one player and use our Right To Match (RTM) cards for players who have done well for us like Glenn Maxwell, David Miller, Hashim Amla, Sandeep Sharma or Mohit Sharma. We are planning to use all our RTM cards. We would like to pick new talent. We have done it in the past with Sandeep Sharma or Axar Patel.’’

Kings XI Punjab narrowly missed out on making it through to the playoffs for IPL 2017 as they finished fifth, just two points behind Kolkata Knight Riders in the group stage. KXIP have only qualified for the playoffs twice in the 10 year history of the tournament. They made the semi-final of the inaugural edition of the tournament and finished runners-up in the 2014 edition.

“We want to rebuild the whole franchise. It is up to Brad Hodge, Viru and his team to deliver,” Wadia added.

The player retention event will take place in Mumbai on Thursday and it will be telecast live on Star Sports from 7pm.

Considering the amount of money that they will have to spend to retain three players, Kings XI Punjab’s policy of just retaining one player certainly makes sense. While they have some consistent performers, there haven’t been too many standout players and starting off with a clean slate makes a lot of sense and affords them with the purse to pursue the players that they want during the IPL Auction 2018.

The build-up to the Indian Premier League (IPL) is always an interesting one considering the auctions that are always filled with hype, suspense and excitement followed by the appointment of support staff, the composition of the schedule and the allocation of games at venues.

Since the auction itself is going to be a much-awaited one considering it will involve a major overhaul is set to take place in Bengaluru on January 27 and 28.

Before the IPL auctions take place, there will be an IPL player retention event, which will be held in Mumbai on January 4.

With the deadline for the retention closing in, it has been reported that Star Sports will telecast the event. Earlier, the player retention used to be done through formal e-mails, which was sent to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by the IPL teams.

The officials of the IPL teams have been asked to be present here on Thursday evening. As reported by Pune Mirror, efforts are also being made to see if a few ‘retained’ players can also turn up on the day and whole event will be telecast live on Star Sports, which has bagged the IPL broadcast rights.

“The idea is to send out a message that that the IPL is not just about money. A lot of effort is put in team-building and we want to start the IPL coverage through retention. The retained players form the core of the teams,” a Star official was quoted saying to Pune Mirror.

As briefly reported by this paper yesterday, promotions of the programme have not yet started because technically, Sony were the holders of the rights till December 31. The mega-auction of the league’s 11th edition will be held in Bengaluru on January 27 and 28. This year’s auction will see teams having an increased budget of Rs 80 crore from previous Rs 66 crore. All five players can be retained by a franchise, which includes two Right to Match cards.

Though the time of the event is yet to be confirmed by the broadcasters, it is expected that it will get underway at 1900 IST.

Earlier, it was reported that the coverage will start as early as January, in spite of the actual event will take place in April-May. The broadcasters have singled out six months exclusively for the event and will have as many as 10 dedicated channels on their network for the most-anticipated event in the Indian Cricket calendar.
