IPL 2018: Virender Sehwag wants two players in KXIP squad

Virender Sehwag has always spoken his mind. A sensation on Twitter, the squash buckling opener is as flamboyant with his words as he was in his playing days. After his retirement, at the age of 39, Sehwag continues to coach and do some punditry. He has been fantastic with that as well.

The former Indian opener sat down with Times of India and talked about IPL and ousted players. He was quite vocal about certain things and like his bat, his words were hitting the questions out of the stadium. Sehwag talked about his team KXIP, Yuvraj Singh and he did not forget to talk about Ashish Nehra as well.
Virender Sehwag was asked whether his team is smaller than any other team. It is because the team from Punjab don’t have big Indian names. Sehwag denied it straight away and said that no team is small. He was quick to remind that they reached the finals in 2014 with young Indian players. He also said that the purse for every team in the auction is the same, so it is just about buying smart for Viru.

“There isn’t any small team in the IPL, the purse size (Rs 80 cr) stays the same for all and everyone will try to spend their entire purse. In fact, in this year’s auction, the best part is that we and Rajasthan Royals have the most amount of money to spend.

“However, we’re called a ‘small’ team because we don’t have ‘big’ players. In 2014, we had a team with not too many star players, but we reached the final using a limited purse. Our aim this time is to spend money to buy many Indian players,” Viru added.
Virender Sehwag is a huge admirer of exuberant batters and that is what he is looking for. The fact that they have only retained Axar Patel shows that KXIP is looking to rebuild the team from scratch. When asked about who he would target at the auction, Virender Sehwag was quick to talk about dodge the question and said, for the fans, it would be the Punjab boys.

“I think the fans would want Punjab stars like Yuvraj and Harbhajan Singh in the Kings XI team,” said Viru. The name of Yuvraj Singh led to another question which saw the former Indian vice-captain back the southpaw. He said the Yuvraj Singh is not done yet and he will be back in the Indian team sooner rather than later.

“He’s not in the Indian team, but Yuvraj is still an amazing player. His talent is intact. Even a current India player can lose form. I don’t think we’ll get a player like him again. If his form his good, he’s a match-winner,” said Virender.
Sehwag didn’t blink while taking these names. He was quite sure that players like Ben Stokes, Dwayne Bravo and some others will be in demand. He also talked about how much these players will cost in the auction which is scheduled on 27th and 28th of January.

“Ben Stokes, Dwayne Bravo and Mitchell Starc are the international players everyone wants. I won’t be surprised if Stokes goes for around $1.5 million. I expect the capped India players to fetch around Rs 10-12cr too. Among the uncapped players, Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda would be in demand,” concluded Sehwag.

IPL 2018: Will he be the perfect captain for Kings XI Punjab?

India’s domestic T20 tournament, Indian Premier League (IPL), is still a couple of months away but the fact that all the franchises would have to buy players again, barring the retained ones, has already sent team owners to their think room. While the names of retained players were out on January 4, the teams are now making strategies for the auction which is scheduled to take place on January 27-28 in Bengaluru.

Kings XI Punjab, who retained only one player – left-arm spinner Axar Patel for Rs 6.5 crore, are eyeing to buy South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis and make him the skipper as well. The right-hander, who has been associated with Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant in past, remains to be one of the most established batsmen in world cricket.

The Kings did not have a great decade in terms of results and have tried many players in the skipper’s role.

KXIP CEO, Satish Menon, however, is still upbeat about the side and was enthusiastic about the change of fortunes for them in the 2018 season.

“The good thing about the fate is that it will change one day. Last few years haven’t been good for us. Fans still supported the team during the bad times. And they want better. You may never know that we might resurge in this season with Faf du Plessis as the Kings XI Punjab’s skipper,” Menon was quoted as saying by Cricket Addictor.

IPL 2018: Players Kings XI Punjab could retain using RTM

One of the biggest surprises of the IPL player retention was Kings XI Punjab’s decision to retain just one player. They opted to go with Axar Patel ahead of several T20 superstars as they look to build a team that could help them claim their maiden IPL title.

Retaining only one player allows them to use three RTM cards in the auction and with players such as David Miller, Glenn Maxwell, Hashim Amla, Marcus Stoinis and Sandeep Sharma in the pool, the Punjab team will look to bring all their three cards into play.

IPL 2018: Will he be perfect addition to the Kings XI Punjab squad?

With the Sunrisers Hyderabad not retaining veteran Indian all rounder Yuvraj Singh, he might find himself back playing for his first club – Kings XI Punjab, who retained only Axar Patel.

Yuvraj was with the Kings XI for the first three seasons before moving to the Pune Warriors India.

With the auctions coming up in a few weeks, Virender Sehwag and the rest of the team management will probably look to rope in Yuvraj, who has been one of India’s most successful T20I players.

Yuvraj, who is currently playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, which is the domestic T20 tournament held in India, has been in decent form with 85 runs in two matches, including a half-century in a nail-biting victory against the Delhi Daredevils.

However, he was not at his fearsome best as his strike-rate was just above 100.

He has been quite inconsistent with the bat over the past year or so, with just a few notable performances for the Indian cricket team.

He performed decently well in the IPL last year with 252 runs in 12 innings at an average of 28.

Overall, he has played 120 matches in the IPL and has scored 2587 runs at an average of 25.61 and a strike-rate of 131.18.

He could be a worthy addition to the Kings XI side, who have been struggling over the past few years. He would bring in a lot of experience with him and he would also be able to guide the youngsters in the side.

A move the to the Kings XI will also work really well with the fans, since Yuvraj belongs to Mohali.

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) has been part of the Indian Premier League since its inception in 2008. But the team has failed to perform on most of the occasions having just reached the play-off stage twice so far.

They had reached into the semifinals in 2008 and their best performance came in IPL 2015 when they reached the finals but suffered a defeat at hands of Kolkata Knight Riders.

The team is owned by Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman and Karan Paul (KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited).

IPL 2018: Kings XI Punjab choose new home ground

kings eleven punjab

Going into the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kings XI Punjab franchise will continue with Mohali as their principle home venue, with Indore being the second choice. Mohali, will host four of the seven home games, while Indore will see the other three home games for the Kings XI Punjab.

This decision came about after matters related to the security arrangements between the Punjab Government and Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) last year, had been resolved.

In August 2017, the Kings XI Punjab had asked the BCCI to allow them to shift from Mohali because of a lack of support from the PCA and the local authorities. KXIP also complained that a lack of fans had resulted in low revenue.

“We wanted to shift our base from Mohali but the main issue regarding the security has been resolved between the government and the Punjab Cricket Association. We are happy to be play in Mohali as there is different energy there,” Satish Menon, the franchise’s chief executive officer told The Indian Express.

“We will be playing four games in Mohali and the remaining three in Indore. It has been a good venue for us, and the response has been great as we have seen packed houses last year,” Menon added.
