IPL 2018: Will Delhi Daredevils go for this star player?

Indian Premier League’s (IPL) most erratic and ever- varying Delhi Daredevils (DD) will yet again be in action for the all important player auction. This time the IPL 2018 auction is bigger than ever with as many as 1,122 players up for grabs. Purchasing players have never been a problem for DD; they have shelled INR 8.5 crore for Pawan Negi and INR 16 crore for Yuvraj Singh in the past.

Sadly for Delhi, what they lack is in team work and approach on the field. Ahead of the player auctions, Delhi decided to retain the trinity of Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Chris Morris. Pant and Iyer have both been stars thus for Delhi, in the 2017 edition, they accumulated 338 and 366 runs respectively. Morris, on the other hand, turned into a valuable asset to Delhi in due time, thanks to his explosive batting and hard-hitting bowling.

Daredevils have a total of two RTM (right to match) cards remaining for the auctions. They have a total of purse of INR 47 crore to spend from. Out of the INR 80 crore allotted, INR 33 crore (though Pant, Morris and Iyer will be earning fees of 8 crore, 7.1 crore and 7 crore respectively) has already been deducted of the purse by retaining three players.

Daredevils have roped in former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as head coach. His credentials with Mumbai Indians (MI) in the same capacity saw the side attain great heights. Let us have a look into who Delhi and team management could pick in the auctions.

Delhi have already indicated that they want to invest in youngsters going ahead. With that in mind, a lot of India A, Under-19 and uncapped players could be under Ponting’s keen eye.

Talking about international stars, DD could look to bring in Gautam Gambhir, who has time and again mentioned that he would love to finish his IPL career with original home, Delhi. Gambhir’s tactical brilliance and his ability to groom youngsters’ could well synch with DD’s ethos.

Kolkata Knight Riders has enjoyed immense success in the last seven seasons under Gambhir, including two IPL triumphs. Delhi’s fortunes can change here.

One could expect Delhi to use one of their RTM for Kagiso Rabada. Rabada was a revelation in the last IPL and has since then grown in stature.

Delhi’s catchment area has a lot of upcoming player that could do well being around the side. The likes of Navdeep Saini, Dhruv Shorey and Kulwant Khejroliya could be in their scheme of things.

Ponting’s emphasis on Australian-grown talent could mean Indian fans witness D’Arcy Short. Short is having a time of his life in BBL and might be picked up by DD. Another healthy addition to Delhi’s arsenal could be Mitchell Johnson.

Another player that could be the glue to Delhi’s plans is Carlos Brathwaite. Despite having a hot and cold IPL 2017, Delhi might use RTM for West Indies’ all-rounder.

With a clear emphasis on youth, Delhi Daredevils might be Rajasthan Royals in disguise heading into the IPL 2018.

IPL 2018: Will he be perfect addition to the Delhi Daredevils squad?

IPL outfit Delhi Daredevils want Bangladesh’s ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in their team for the upcoming India Premier League (IPL), report suggested.

Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who had featued in the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders in the past seven seasons, was earlier released by the Kolkata outfit for the upcoming edition of the money-spinning tournament. With Shakib now available through an auction, Delhi Daredevils are apparently interested in the Bangladesh talisman.

A spokesperson for the Delhi Daredevils confirmed their interest in the top all-rounder from Bangladesh.

The all-rounder’s name will be in the present along with one thousand and 122 cricketers when the IPL auctions take place on January 27 and 28 at Bengaluru.

The sixth edition of the the IPL auctions will also feature seven other Bangladsh players Tamim Iqbal Mustafizur Rahman, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Liton Das, Sabbir Rahman and Abul Hasan.

IPL 2018: Delhi Daredevils retained Players

Delhi Daredevils have retained all the three players: Chris Morris, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. They go into auctions with two Right To Match.

Retention 1 – Chris Morris (₹ 15 Crs)
Retention 2 – Rishabh Pant (₹ 11 Crs)
Retention 3 – Shreyas Iyer (₹ 7 Crs)

Now they are left with ₹ 47 Crs + 2 RTM

IPL 2018: Players Delhi Daredevils (DD) should retain

Delhi Daredevils has had bad IPL campaigns so far. Of the 10 tournaments that it played, it qualified only thrice for the semi-finals but never made it to the final. With the auction coming up early next year, DD would need to closely evaluate which players would be most beneficial for the team to retain.

Here are the players that Delhi Daredevils should absolutely retain (2 retention + 3 RTM card) for the 2018 season:

1. Chris Morris

Chris Morris

Chris Morris is a quality all-rounder worth so much in any form of the game and in T20s, they are like gold dust. It would be a blessing in disguise for DD to have an all-rounder who can bowl four overs whenever he takes the field and score crucial runs with the bat whenever needed.

DD bought Christopher Morris in 2016 IPL Auction for ₹7,00,00,000

Without a shadow of a doubt, Morris has been Daredevils’ best player in the last couple of seasons and it will be a huge blunder if the franchise decides to let him go. He is capable of bowling four overs in every game with at least two of them coming in the death overs.

Letting Morris go will not only be a huge loss for Delhi but also a massive advantage for whichever team manages to pick him up. The Delhi fans will hope that the franchise has learnt from its past mistakes and not release a player of Morris’ caliber ahead of the next season.

2. Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer

DD signed Shreyas Iyer in the 2015 player auction for a whopping Rs. 2.6 crores, making him the IPL’s highest paid uncapped player.

He amassed 439 runs in 14 innings with a strike rate of 128.36 to become the ninth most consistent player in the tournament. He also bagged the Emerging Player Award that year.

The youngster has the potential to replicate Kolhi’s successes and can effectively lead DD’s batting lineup.

3.  Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson

Ever since making his debut for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, Sanju Samson has looked promising with the bat. When the team was banned for two years, he was bought by Rahul Dravid’s Delhi Daredevils and continued to grow as a batsman under the guidance of the former Indian skipper.

DD bought Sanju Samson in 2016 IPL Auction for ₹4,20,00,000

The 2016 season was a breakthrough one for the youngster from Kerala as he amassed 386 runs in 14 matches at an average of 28 and strike-rate of 141. He also scored a century in the tournament and put an end to the “can’t score runs fast” tag.

He, along with Rishabh Pant, played a key role for Zaheer Khan and his men in the tenth edition. With age on his side and the prospect of representing India at the top level in the near future, Delhi Daredevils will look to retain the right-hander.

4. Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant

One of the brightest spots for Delhi Daredevils in the tenth edition of the IPL was Rishabh Pant.

DD bought Rishabh Pant in 2016 IPL Auction for ₹1,90,00,000

The left-hander wasn’t used very smartly by the team management as he was made to bat down the order in most of their matches and by the time he was promoted to No. 3, the season was all but over for the Daredevils.

There were reports that Daredevils’ mentor Rahul Dravid advised the franchise to retain Pant and it remains to be seen whether they take heed of his advice.

5. Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock is already one of the best batsman going around at the moment. In the last three years he has been sensational and credit should be given to Delhi Daredevils for buying the youngster in the 2013 auction.

The way de Kock is progressing, it won’t be a surprise if he becomes as good a limited-overs batsman as Virat Kohli in the near future. The left-hander is already on his way to greatness as he has toppled various records with ease and is in the same bracket as the likes of Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, David Warner and AB de Villiers,

Signing De Kock was one of the best decisions made by the franchise ever since its inception in 2008 and Delhi should retain him in the next auction instead of releasing him like they did with David Warner, AB de Villiers, and Glenn Maxwell.

Delhi could not avail of his services in this year’s IPL due to a finger injury and they should make sure that their batting line-up revolves around the wicket-keeper batsman irrespective of who they sign in the 2018 IPL auction.
