Retaining three players allows them to use two RTM cards in the auction and with players such as Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith and Andrew Tye in the pool, Chennai Super Kings will look to bring both the cards into play.
MS Dhoni on Friday revealed Chennai Super Kings’s plan to retain local boy Ravichandran Ashwin during the upcoming IPL 2018 auction slated to take place in Bengaluru on January 27 and 28.
Dhoni has now made it clear that the franchise will go after Ashwin in the auction. “I want local players in the Chennai Super Kings. Being a local lad, will go for him during auctions and try to get him,” the former Indian captain said during a promotional event in Chennai.
CSK, who had a total of INR 80 crore in their auction purse, are left with only 47 crore to spend in the upcoming players’ auction after shelling out 33 crore on retention of Dhoni (Rs 15 crore), Suresh Raina (Rs 11 crore) and Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 7 crore).
They have also two Right To Match (RTM) cards that can be used to regain the services of a couple of their former players.
MS Dhoni, though, added that the franchise would not be able to use RTM cards for Ashwin and instead they would be used to select other proven CSK performers.
“We also have our former players Brendon McCullum, Faf du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo. We have two RTMs. But we have to know when and where to use them. With Ashwin we cannot use the RTM as we have already got three Indian players retained. We have to buy him in the auction. He will come first in the auction. But as I said, we will have to wait and watch. We will try to get him,” he said.
India may have lost their 2nd Test match against South Africa in Centurion on Wednesday and in the process, surrendered the three-match series to the Proteas, but Lungi Ngidi has managed to make a stunning name for himself even in the country.
The 21-year-old right arm fast bowler, who made his debut in the Test match after Dale Steyn was ruled out of the remainder of the Test series owing to injury, picked up a total of seven wickets in the match.
Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul and others remained in his hit list in the second innings as he picked up a total of six wickets for 39 runs from 12.2 overs.
With the grand IPL auction 2018 just a few days away in India, Lungi might have just done wonders to his luck. As per reports, the fast bowler has managed to impress some of the teams already.
Lungi’s base price in the auction is Rs 50 Lakh.
“His name was already there in the overseas players’ list before the Centurion Test, since he was a part of the South African squad, but he’s likely to be in huge demand now,” the Times of India has quoted a source as saying.
After Australia, South Africa have the most number of players throwing their hat to take part in the IPL 2018 tournament.
According to the official release, 57 cricketers, which includes the likes of Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla and Kagiso Rabada, are vying for places in the teams during the IPL auction.
In our view, nothing should stop Lungi Ngidi from being a part of Chennai Super Kings. The two-time IPL champions are returning after a ban of two years and they are looking at making an impact straightaway.
The franchisee have already retained their star player MS Dhoni, along with Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja. Getting Lungi now could be an instant hit with the fans.
Having a player whose name is Lungi will no doubt be an absolutely super step on the behalf of CSK. And the player has proven himself too.
The 21-year-old has played 39 T20s (including three T20Is) in his career so far and has a total of 43 wickets. Lungi is also a part of famed South African T20 franchisee Titans.

Reports suggest that CSK had offered former Australian pace legend, Brett Lee, to be the bowling coach for the upcoming edition, which has been declined by the stalwart. According to Mumbai Mirror, the 41-year-old said he wants to continue being involved in TV commentary with “Star Sports” and not engage in on-field activities.
Lee had worked as Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) bowling mentor in IPL 2013. He was also the mentor and brand ambassador of Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) team Ruby Kanchi Warriors in the inaugural edition of the local T20 league in 2016.
Lee returned to TNPL last year – not as the mentor of Kanchi Warriors but as commentator with “Star Sports”.
Reports also add that CSK’s former opener Stephen Fleming will be the head coach of the franchise, while Australia great Michael Hussey in all likeliness will be the batting coach.
Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who had worked with Fleming at Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) might also work with CSK in IPL 11. Notably, the former India cricketer and Tamil Nadu coach was credited for spotting and inducting young talents into RPS.
CSK was suspended owing to the 2013 spot-fixing scandal, which shook the league to its core and allegedly involved not just players but also some top officials of the franchise.
The player pool available for CSK for retention/RTM will be the players’ who played for them in IPL 2015 and who were part of RPS and Gujarat Lions squads in IPL 2017.
Here are the players that Chennai Super Kings should absolutely retain (3 retention + 2 RTM card) for the 2018 season:
1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni
It would be impossible to imagine CSK without ‘Thala’ Dhoni. Dhoni has captained CSK right from the first edition of the IPL till 2015 when the team was suspended and has a terrific record in the tournament. Under the leadership of Dhoni, CSK won the 2010 and 2011 editions of the tournament and finished as runners-up in the 2008, 2012, 2013 and the 2015 editions. In all the editions, Captain Cool has managed to take the team to the playoff stage. Dhoni has also captained the side to victory in the 2010 and the 2014 editions of the Champions League.
Though not the same player that he was on the field five years ago, Dhoni still packs a punch and is the heartthrob of Chennai.
There is absolutely no doubt that CSK will retain their skipper, who has been their recipe for success in the tournament.
2. Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina has been one of CSK’s best batsmen in the IPL. The left-hander has a few unforgettable innings to his name in the yellow jersey and is undoubtedly one of the best batsmen of the tournament. Raina represented Chennai in all eight seasons of the IPL before the team got suspended. He also holds a unique record of playing the most number of IPL matches.
Raina is the highest run scorer in IPL history. He has scored 4,540 runs in 161 matches at an average of 34.13 and a strike rate of 139.09. He has a century and as many as 31 half-centuries to his name in the IPL and his highest score in the tournament is an unbeaten 100.
The Raina we know today is very different from the Raina we knew when he was in yellow. His form and future are being majorly criticised, but we hope that the man can find his form upon rejoining his favourite team.
3. Dwayne Bravo
The ‘Champion’ from the Caribbean is one of the best entertainers of the game. He adds a much-needed flavour to the IPL and has been a vital part of the CSK squad ever since he moved to the side in 2011. The all-rounder has picked up wickets at crucial times for the Super Kings and has also played some handy knocks for the men in yellow.
Bravo is the 5th highest wicket-taker in IPL history. He has picked up 122 wickets in 106 matches. He has also scored 1,238 runs at an average of 22.92 and a strike rate of 125.94.
Bravo will surely be welcomed back by the team in yellow.
4. Brendon McCullum
The hard-hitting Kiwi batsman is another player CSK should retain. The right-hander has given excellent starts for all the teams he represents, at the top of the order. In the 2014 and 2015 editions of the IPL where he represented CSK, McCullum has played many match-winning innings with his partner Dwayne Smith. He played for the Gujarat Lions in the 2016 and 2017 editions when CSK was out suspended. McCullum played a similar role while with the Lions, scoring plenty of runs and getting his team to good starts.
He is very experienced and can play a vital role in the dressing room as well.
McCullum should be retained by CSK.
5. Ravichandran Ashwin
The off-spinner has been a part of CSK right from the first edition till the team was handed a suspension in 2016. He made his name in the IPL playing for the Super Kings, where he caught the selectors’ attention and was picked for the national side. The rest, as they say, is history.
Being a local boy, Ashwin is sure to ‘whistle-podu’ for the Super Kings next year.
