Devotees of Lord Krishna observe a 24 hour fast on this day. Devotees participate a special ‘Arati’ at the midnight and then break their fast, the time when Lord Krishna is believed to have been born. Devotees decorate the temples of Lord Krishna with flowers, lights, etc and praise of Lord Krishna by chanting Sanskrit hymns, singing bhajan and Kirtans with the musical instruments like bell, dholaks etc.  Special cradles are installed at temples and a small statue of the “Balgopal” is placed in them. Recitation of the “Bhagavatam” is one of the most comman praticse for the day. At Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, special spiritual gatherings are organised on this day.

Devotees of Lord Krishna solemnise the festival with lot of joy and enthusiasm. On the occasion of ‘Gokulashtami’, we can find kids forming a human pyramid to reach the pot full of curds (dahi-handi) and break it and describing Lord Krishna’s childhood naughtiness.
