Diwali is around the corner. Today is Dhanteras, the first day of the five day diwali festival.
During Diwali, women draw beautiful Rangoli – Kolam (Rangoli of Flowers) at their door openings or courtyards.
The main purpose of making rangoli at the doorstep, on Diwali, is to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth.
Rangoli or Kolams are made using colored powders, flower petals, or ground rice paste.
‘Rangoli’ is a Sanskrit word which means a creative expression of art by making use of colors. The word rangoli also comes from words “rang” (color) + “aavalli” (row), which means row of colors.
