The month of Shravan, Shravan Mas or Sawan, is the 5th month of the Hindu lunar calender and the 1st month in the series of the Chaturmaas.
Shravan is considered as the holiest month of the year. This one month is marked by auspicious activities and poojas.
Each Monday of this month, known as Shravan Somavar, is a favorite day for Lord Shiva and is considered more powerful instead the other Mondays.
Shravan Somavar are highly revered and special pujas and archanas are done on this day to please Bholenath. On these special Monday devotees perform abhishek on the Shiv linga or the idol of Lord Shiva with holy water, raw milk, etc and offer Bilva Patra (leaves) and flowers on the Shiv linga and fast for the day known as the Shravan Somwar Vrat.

In 2017, as per North Indian Calendar, Shravan month begins on 10th July 2017 and ends on 7th August 2017, whereas in case of Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu & Kannada calendars it starts on 24th July 2017 and ends on 21st August 2017.

Procedure and rituals to observe Vrat on Shravan Somwar :
After taking bath in the morning first pray to Lord Ganesha, then pray to Lord Shiva by chanting “Om Namah Shivay”, and offering lord Shiva to Bilva Patra (leaves) some flowers, water, Dahi, Milk and honey. Do abhishek with water, Dahi, Milk and Honey.
Do fast from sunrise to sunset and chant “Maha Mritunjaya Mantra” and “Om Namah Shivaya” on this day or you can read Shiva Purana. After praying Lord Shiva and all rituals you can break the fast in the evening. Visit the Shrines of Shiva and pray for peace and Happiness.
Importance of Shravan :
This is the time when Lord Shiva drank the poisonous Hala – hala came out from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) for the quest of the Nectar(ambrosia) and shook the universe. To protect the universe, Lord Shiva drank the poison and kept it at his throat. As he drank the poison, Goddess Parvati held his neck to stop him from drinking it and he held it in his throat, since then Lord Shivas throat appeared blue and hence Lord Shivas is also known with the name – Neelakantha (the One with the Blue throat).
Benefits of Shravan Somvar Vrat :
Many Hindu and devout of Lord Shiva believed that god fulfill all desires and blessed with wisdom who observe Somwar Vrat. Many women in India also do Somwar Vrat for getting ideal husband who can fulfill their dreams.
Men also worship Shrawan Somvar vrat for their academic, professional success.

Rituals followed during Shravan month, especially on Shravan Somvars :
- Observe fast and abstain from meat, eggs, onion.
- Observe Mauna Vrat(silence in speech) atleast for a few hours of the day.
- Eat austere and stay simple.
- Wake up early and visit Shiva temple and offer Bilava/Bel leaves and water over the Shiva Linga.
