Mumbai Lakes Water Levels : Monsoon 2016 – 11 June 2016

Mumbai Monsoon 2016 : Rains have finally commenced in Mumbai on Saturday morning, June 11, 2016, marking an end to the prolonged dry spell.

Due to poor rainfall in last two years, entire Maharashtra, including Mumbai, is facing a severe drought situation.

At the end of the 2015 Mumbai Monsoon season on September 30, 2015, the 2 lakes that provide Mumbai with 64% of its Lake water were far from full capacity. Bhatsa, which provides 48% of Mumbai’s water, had filled up to only 81% of its capacity and Upper Vaitarna, which provides 16% of Mumbai’s lake water, had filled up to only 71% of its capacity.

On 22 September, 2015, water in Mumbai’s lakes was only 11.30 Lakh million litres, which is 240 days of water supply. The total storage capacity of Mumbai’s lakes is 14.30 lakh million litres.

Fortunately Mumbai is still receiving regular water, thanks to BMC’s early decision to cut water supply to the city by 20% for residential users and by 50% to commercial users across the city.

People across the city would be praying that this year its rains above normal and all they get rid of this water shortage.

As rain progresses, people across Mumbai would start searching for Mumbai Lakes Water Levels during Monsoon 2016.

Mumbai records average rainfall of 523.1 mm during June, which increases significantly to 799.7 in July. However rain continues till the end of September in most of the years.

Mumbai city normally receives 3,350 million litres of water daily from seven reservoirs, Vihar, Tulsi, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna and Bhatsa.

Currently, the total stock in all the seven lakes is less than 67,000 million litres. The city requires 13 lakh million litres stock in order to supply water without a cut through the year.
