Tamil Puthandu – Varusha Pirappu Festival Recipies

Tamil New Year’s Day or Varusha Pirappu or Tamil Puthandu is celebrated in the beginning of Chithirai-the first month in the Tamil Calendar year. On this day people wear new clothes and relish festive food.

Please Find Below the Tamil New Year (Varusha Pirappu)  Recipies :

Medhu Vadai /Urad dhal vada :

Ingredients : Skinned whole urad dal – 1 cup, Green chilies -2, Raw rice -1/2 tsp, Fried gram- 1/2 tsp, Salt -1 tsp flat (crystal salt) or as required. (If using table salt use less), Plastic sheet or banana leaf for making vadas, Oil for deep frying.

Method : Soak Urad dal along with 1/2 tsp rice and 1/2 tsp fried gram for half an hour and refrigerate it for 1 hour.Drain the water and grind it along with green chillies and salt to a smooth and soft batter without adding water.If needed you can sprinkle very little water now and then.It is better to use the wet grinder for grinding. Your batter is now ready. (tips- to find out if your batter is ready, dampen your hand and take a small ball of batter – it should not stick to your hands)

Lime Rice :

Ingredients : 1cup rice, A bunch of coriander leaves, 1 tsp tender and cleaned chick peas, 6 green chillies (optional),
Pinch of turmeric powder, 2 tbsp oil, Juice of two limes, 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, Curry leaves, 1 tsp salt.

Method : Go for basmati rice as it is the long grained variety. Wash the rice and soak it in water. Cook the rice in a manner that the grains of rice are not broken. Heat oil in a deep drying pan or until smoke comes up. To the oil, add mustard seed, split tender peas and the chillies.Fry it until the peas become golden. To this, add lime juice, turmeric and salt to taste.
Let the mixture boil and immediately pour it over cooled cooked rice. Toss the rice in a manner that it gets completed mixed with the lime mixture. Use chopped coriander leaves or fried cashew nuts to garnish and serve.

Mango Pachadi Recipe :

Ingredients : 1 large raw mango, 1/2 cup coconut gratings, fresh 8 gren chillies, minced A pinch of hing (asoefetida) dissolved in 2-3 tsp water, 4 tsps salad oil, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, Salt to taste,

For seasoning: 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1 sprig curry leaves, 1-2 tsp oil for seasoning

Method : Grate the mango and set aside. Crush together the coconut, green chillies and salt. Make the dressing by combining the green chillies, salt, red chilli powder, salad oil and coconut. Mix the dressing with the grated mango.
Season with mustard and curry leaves.

Cashew Nut Payasam Recipe

Ingredients: Milk – 4 cups, Sugar – 3/4 cup, Raw Rice – 1 tablespoon, Coconut gratings – 3 tablespoon, Cashew Nuts – 10
Cardamom Powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Method: Soak rice and cashew nuts in water for 15 minutes. Grind soaked rice, cashew nuts and coconut to a fine paste.
Boil milk and add sugar. Reduce heat. Add half cup water to the ground paste and make a liquid.Add this to the boiling milk.
Stir continously till it boils well. Add cardamom powder and remove from stove.
