“Vishu” in Sanskrit means “equal”. It is a Hindu festival celebrated in the state of Kerala and in Mangalore/Udupi districts of Karnataka. Vishu is the new year as per the Kolla Varsha or the Kerala/Malayalam Calendar. It is usually celebrated in the second week of April.
This day signifies the Sun’s transit into the Mesha Raasi, (as per Indian astrological calculations) and represents the vernal equinox or the autumnal equinox i.e.; when the length of day and night is equal.
The most important event in this festival is the Vishu kkani, which is a collection of auspicious things like raw rice, fresh lemon, golden cucumber, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, yellow flowers konna (Cassia fistula), a holy text and coins, in a bell metal vessel called uruli. It is placed near the temple or in the worshiping room of the house, along with a lighted bell metal lamp called nilavilakku. This is arranged the night before.
According to the custom on the day of Vishu, people celebrating it wake up at dawn and go to the Vishu kkani with eyes closed so that the first sight of the new season is the Vishu kkani.
