It is the day which marks the transition of the Sun into Makara rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path. The day is also celebrated as a harvest festival in many parts of the country.

The festival is known as Shishur Saenkraat in Kashmir Valley
The festival is known as Makara Vilakku at Sabarimala Temple in Kerala
